To provide the Australian roller derby community with a high-quality magazine that is both delicious and nutritious in editorial content, reflects the ever-changing and evolving roller derby landscape and is 100% made, produced and published in Australia.
It’s been a year of firsts for many leagues and for the Australian roller derby community.
New rivals went head to head in their first interleague bouts and state championships (page 24).
Australian leagues sized up against the US with the Texas Rollergirls’ Hotrod Honeys facing off with Victorian Roller Derby League (VRDL) and Seattle’s Rat City All Stars playing VRDL, Sun State Roller Girls and Northern Brisbane Rollers.
The first Australian league, VRDL, was accepted as a member league into the Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association (WFTDA).
And for the first time Australia was represented on the world stage at the first Roller Derby World Cup when Team Australia battled Germany, Finland, Scotland, Sweden, USA and England to take out a kick-arse fourth place (results to the right).
These exciting firsts have served to further stimulate the growth of roller derby Down Under. (Yes, I just used the words growth, stimulate and Down Under in one sentence.)
This time last year HAM featured 40 leagues on the derby map. Now there are more than 70 (page 19).
In this issue HAM celebrates a first of our own. It’s the first time we have porked up our pages, bringing the HAM reader a whopping 46.1% more bacon!
In our biggest issue yet we profile South Sea Roller Derby’s Misty Meaner (page 44) and get down with Bunbury Roller Derby’s very own Major Lee Unstable (page 46). We take a look at junior roller derby (page 50), cover issues such as mental health (page 33) and blow the derby craft scene wide open (page 64).
International HAMster Wheels McCoy shows us her balls (page 74) and we find out the favourite equipment of those in the know (page 60).
After a hectic schedule, most leagues are winding up over Xmas and New Year and a hot mess of derby girls are taking a break from the track to spend some time with loved ones.
HAM’s Xmas wish for everyone is a safe, happy and injury-free festive season filled with barbeques, lazy outdoor skates and good times.
Rest up, because 2012 is set to be another huge year.
